Sydney Airport’s Worst Baggage Claim: Three Jailed for Cocaine Cargo Caper
Published:
In a plot that was less Ocean’s Eleven and more Dumb and Dumber, three men were jailed after trying to sneak 100kg of cocaine into Australia by stuffing it in the cargo hold of a Johannesburg-to-Sydney flight.
Two of the culprits, aged 63 and 57, worked at Sydney Airport and were supposed to ensure smooth handling of the illegal “baggage.” Instead, they ensured a smooth trip to prison, with one receiving a 10-year sentence and the other three years. A third accomplice, 25, was meant to pick up the stash but will now be picking up life lessons behind bars for the next two years and nine months.
Authorities are still hunting two more suspected members of the smuggling ring. Meanwhile, Sydney Airport staff are left wondering: If cocaine is worth millions per kilo, why risk it for an airport salary?
